Bar/Bat Mitzvah

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony is a life cycle event which indicates a high level of commitment to Jewish studies and to the Jewish way of life. This ceremony is part of the total Religious School educational experience. B’nai Harim’s Religious School emphasizes the importance of continuing Jewish education, not just a single life cycle experience.

A child becomes Bar/Bat Mitzvah at age 13. The public ceremony celebrating a student’s step into Jewish adulthood may take place at that age or at any subsequent time, depending on the student’s level of preparedness and commitment.  In order to qualify for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony, the students must successfully complete a minimum of two years of Religious School, including Hebrew studies. The student’s parents must be full-time members in good standing of Congregation B’nai Harim.

Students who meet the expected reading standards in Hebrew and who have attended classes and services regularly will be eligible for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony.

Approximately 6 – 9 months prior to the ceremony, the student is required to attend Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutoring in addition to regular Religious School classes. These sessions focus on special learning activities* related to being a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, as well providing training for the ceremony. As the selected date approaches, the Rabbi will  meet with the student to explain the Mitzvah Program and to offer guidance in the preparation of his or her D’var Torah (speech). She will meet with the family in order to plan the service together. The Religious School can provide the name of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor who will offer the private training. The financial obligation for this additional tutorial work rests with the parents of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah student. For additional information, please contact the Rabbi at the temple contact number, 570-646-0100 or at 570 871-3022.

It is the policy of B’nai Harim that admission to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program for students attending a Jewish day school requires that the child’s parents be full-time members of B’nai Harim or another synagogue for at least one year before admission.
